Unfortunately the lectures are not well designed for the intended audience. The biographical sections lack a clear principle of selection. As a result the chronology is just chronology without the edification appropriate to a hagiography. The first seven lectures are organized chronologically and trace Newman’s life from birth to death, but, after the lecture about Newman’s ordination as a Roman Catholic priest and his decision to form an Oratory, the chronology is interrupted for two lectures on Saint Philip Neri and the Oratory. The last three lectures focus on key CD REVIEW NEWMAN STUDIES JOURNAL 82 aspects of Newman’s thought-conscience, certitude, and holiness-and are based on the four quotations from Newman’s work in The Catechism of the Catholic Church. These three lectures are more inspirational than informational.
Bochanski in the opening talk says that he is not doing a typical hagiography, one in which the outcome is always obvious-as Newman throughout most of his adult life was misunderstood and was not always certain where his path lay although he was always certain that God had a plan for him. As the lectures are introductory in character, I presume they are intended for people largely unfamiliar with Newman’s life and thought who are moved to learn more about him because of his beatification. The lectures are informational but also inspirational as Newman is presented as a saint for our times, a model whose ideas, struggles and spirituality are as significant today as they were 150 years ago. He maintains a steady, deliberate pace that enables the listener to follow his presentations readily and comfortably, an important feature as the CDs are marketed for listening anytime, anywhere. In assessing an audio lecture series, there are two primary considerations: the quality of the oral presentation and the organization and development of the lecture content especially in terms of the intended audience.
His previous publications include two works of local church history, a novena to the Holy Spirit and articles on spirituality. Bochanski joined the Philadelphia Congregation of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in 2004. Charles Borromeo Seminary and ordained in May 1999, Fr.
